Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Five Trojans with double-digit points in exciting win over Lakers

CHICAGO, ILL. ---  This weekend the Trojans took a trip downtown to face conference opponent Roosevelt University. The Trojans and Lakers kept things exciting with a close game that included many lead changes, but Trinity ultimately came out on top with another big CCAC victory, 65-62.

Da'Naria Washington got things started quickly with a layup on the opening possession. During the next few minutes, the Trojans and Lakers traded baskets and after a 3-pointer by Alina Jahnke, the score was tied at 7-7. A minute later, Da'Naria Washing dropped her first 3-pointer of the game and gave the Trojans a lead they would take into the second quarter.

Besides a couple of early free throws by Alina Jahnke, the second quarter began quietly with the first shot sunk after more than two minutes of play. Building on the Trojans lead, Daniela Lopez dropped five consecutive points without an answer by the Lakers, putting Trinity ahead by nine points. With less than two minutes before the break, Breleigh Gula grabbed a rebound after a shot by Carly Scheblo and made the layup as well as converted the free throw after a foul by the Lakers.

Entering the third quarter ahead 38-31, the Trojans lagged on their defensive pressure while the Lakers stepped up their efforts in the initial minutes. The Lakers tied the score 41-41 and after calling a timeout with four minutes remaining the Trojans gained a bit of momentum and retook their lead after back to back to back layups by Alina Jahnke, Taylor Hibicke and a second by Jahnke. The whistle blew to end the third quarter with a narrow lead for the Trojans, 51-48.

The Lakers came out strong in the fourth quarter and within the first five minutes, both teams traded the lead multiple times before it was tied again at 59-59. A jumper by Taylor Hibicke followed by two free throws by Alina Jahnke gave the Trojans a four point lead. The Lakers countered with a 3-pointer but as time ran out, they were forced to foul the Trojans and after Hibicke sank two free throws the Trojans had secured the victory.
