Trojans sweep Sabercats in non-conference doubleheader

WATERTOWN, Wisc. --- Yesterday afternoon Trinity hit the road again for their final non-conference matchup against the Sabercats of Maranatha Baptist University. In a pair of seven innings games, the Trojans swept the Sabercats by a combined score of 31-10.
 
Game One: TIU 16, Maranatha Baptist 8
After a scoreless first inning, Maranatha Baptist opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead.

At the top of the third inning, the Trojans scored two runs by capitalizing on multiple pitching mistakes.


Both teams were unable to create any offense in the fourth inning, but rallied in the fifth inning to increase the score on both sides. Trinity collected eight runs from 6 hits in the top of the fifth. Blake Lazaris led off with a double before Andrew Johnson singled with an RBI. Ethan Oskroba, Ridley Edington, and Brady Popovich nabbed singles throughout the inning while Jackson Schutzenhofer collected a double.


The Sabercats connected for a triple and sent two runners home. 


Trinity continued to rally at the plate in the top of the sixth, scoring three more. Ridley Edington tripled after Samuel Edington walked and Oskroba singled to get on base. Brady Popovich followed with an RBI single and brought the Trojans lead to 13-5. 


The Sabercats answered in the bottom of the sixth and scored three as well, capitalizing on a couple of Trojan errors.


Scoring two more in the top of the seventh, the Trojans secured their victory.

 
Game Two: TIU 15, Maranatha Baptist 2
Keeping the momentum from game one, the Trojans grabbed three early runs in the top of the first inning. Luis Henriquez walked then stole second to put himself in scoring position before Blake Lazaris hit a single. Taking advantage of Sabercat errors, Henriquez stole home and Lazaris took third before scoring as well. Ethan Oskroba followed with a homerun and the Trojans exited the first inning with a 3-0 lead.

With bats swinging again, Trinity added four runs in the top of the second inning. Max Amendt led off with a single while later in the lineup Lazaris and Jose Matos hit back to back triples. Matos would score after a passed ball to bring TIU a 7-0 lead.


Maranatha took back one run in the bottom of the third with an RBI single.


At the top of the third inning, the Trojans scored five more nuns and collected six hits. Jackson Schutzenhofer nabbed a double, followed by back to back singles from Henriquez and Lazaris. A few plays later, Samuel and Ridley Edington both doubled, with a single by Oskroba sandwiched between their at bats.


After scoreless fourth and fifth innings, Trinity scored two more in the top of the sixth off of Christian MacKenzie's first career home run.


Maranatha answered with an additional run in the bottom of the sixth before Trinity collected an RBI single in the top of the seventh and finalized the win, 15-2.


Up Next:
The Trojan's (15-27, 4-20) are in the vans again headed south to Indiana to resume their CCAC scheduled against Calumet College of St. Joseph. Opening pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4:00pm.
