Five Trojans earn season high numbers conquering the Sabercats

WATERTOWN, Wisc. — Taking a short break from conference play, the Trojans hit the road last night for a match-up against the Sabercats of Maranatha University. After a dominant first half, the Trojans nearly doubled their first half efforts to secure the victory, 86-52.

From the tip, TIU directed the speed of play as they secured the initial possession and began a ten point run to open play, with Diamond Presniakovas claiming eight of the ten. A jumper from the Sabercats broke up the run, before the Trojans immediately grabbed the next ten again with a pair of back to back treys bookended by a layup. In the latter half of the period Maranatha picked up steam and pushed back offensively as the Trojans continued to forge ahead. At the halftime break, Trinity doubled the Sabercats by a score of 45-21.

Five minutes into the first half, neither team had gained any ground as both added seven points to their total. With 15:30 left to play, the Trojans started to pull away farther as they grabbed back to back buckets, bringing the score to 57-31. Seven minutes later Trinity held their largest lead of the night of 42 points after a three-pointer from freshman guard Brayden Betzner. In the waning minutes of the game, the Sabercats began pushing back but the Trojan offense would not be phased as their defense held firm for the conquest.

A total team effort, ten different players combined on the scoreboard for the TIU victory with a few earning season or career best performances. Diamond Presniakovas led the offensive pressure with 16 points and a season high six free throws, while Jack Kahoun contributed 12 points and career-tying three steals. Sophomore Nabil Kone produced seven rebounds, one assist, block and steal to a season best in all categories. Jaden Thomas matched his season best with a pair of steals. Freshman Brayden Betzner paralleled his highest minutes played as he dropped nine points and secured four rebounds and three steals. Rounding out the Trojan offense, Xavier Cooper earned his latest double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds along with five assists and four steals.

The Trojans (11-7) pick up conference play again tomorrow with a game against Saint Xavier University. Tip off is scheduled for 3:00pm at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Illinois.
