WATERTOWN, Wisc. — Last night the Trojans took a trip up north to the Badger State for a non-conference outing against the Sabercats of Maranatha Baptist University. After bursting from the whistle with a 21-point lead in the first quarter, Trinity carried the momentum throughout and sealed the victory, 81-32.
From the start, TIU controlled the game with an outstanding run of 19 unanswered points, with contributions from four different players. Before the quarter whistle, the Trojans banked another jumper while allowing just a single free throw for the Sabercats. The second quarter saw similar dominance from the Trojans as they doubled their lead, meanwhile holding Maranatha to single digits yet again.
After the first half, Trinity led on the scoreboard while also controlling possession, snatching 12 steals from the Sabercats and forcing 17 turnovers.
While leading 45-9 at the start of the third stanza, Trinity's offense stumbled as they put up their lowest scoring quarter of the game while the Sabercats began to garner momentum. Over the course of the frame, five Trojans put up points to grab 11 more from Marantha and stretch their lead even further. Entering the fourth quarter, Trinity had a commanding lead of 56-17 but the Trojans weren't finished yet. At the buzzer, the Trojans secured their second highest scoring game of the season after dropping another 25 points in the final frame.
In the second half, TIU again controlled the majority of possession despite a flash of momentum from the Sabercats in the final quarter. The Trojans outrebounded their opponent 23-15, while forcing 14 turnovers and grabbing eight steals and two blocks.
Each of TIU's five startings players had a season-high performance in one category or another while two had career nights.
Kaiya Albert put up a season high 21 points and five steals, while
Ashley Geisler secured a season best five rebounds. Senior
Amber Reynolds had a season-high 14 points, two steals, three assists and seven rebounds; the latter was also a career best.
Da'Naria Washington tied her career best six steals while missing a double-double by one assist. Sophomore
Audree Peck continued to dominate beneath the boards with 13 rebounds, while earning a career high 14 points to round out her second career double-double.
The Trojans (3-15) resume conference play tomorrow afternoon with a game against the Cougars of Saint Xavier University. Tip off is scheduled for 1:00pm at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Illinois.
