Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | Ethan Oskroba

Trojans bested in conference tilt vs. Saint Ambrose

DAVENPORT, IA —The inception of the fresh iteration of Trojan men's volleyball has yet to yield consistent results, but the squad continues to forge onward in terms of development and progress, most recently putting up a gutsy effort on the road against conference rival St. Ambrose on Tuesday night.

The first set was not devoid of promise in its early stages, as Trinity rode a pair of kills from attacking standouts Soren Halvorson and Matthew Perry to roll out of the gates to an even start. Unfortunately for the visitors, Ambrose detonated for seven straight scores to establish a daunting 11-3 edge. Trinity's star setter Ethan Losinger did everything he could to wash away the unpropitious start, stuffing the stat sheet with an ace, a block, and two assists, but his efforts failed to kindle the improbable comeback as the home squad romped to a 25-10 victory in the opening frame.

It appeared as if more of the same was in the cards for Trinity as the second set got underway with three straight Ambrose scores that served as a forewarning for the middle of the stanza, where five consecutive tallies for the home squad put the Trojans behind 19-8. However, the Trojans resuscitated their chances with their own string of five unanswered, sparked by an inspired effort from Halvorson, who notched two kills in the span. But while the Trojans closed on an 11-6 run, they were unable to make up for lost time, dropping the set by a 25-19 reckoning in spite of the contributions of Halvorson, who nabbed a trio of finishers in the stanza.

With no option left but to emerge victorious in set three, the Trojans raced out to a strong start in the must-win frame, carving out a 3-1 edge on the merits of a Paul Martinez service ace and a duo block by the two-man wrecking crew of Halvorson and Perry. While the Trojan lead evaporated, they clung to their rival throughout the middle of the set, conjuring up a timely trio of consecutive scores to reduce the Ambrose advantage to 12-11 as the battle continued. The home squad plodded onward, struggling to shake the tenacious Trojans, but eventually Ambrose's attack found its rhythm, with five straight scores and four successive kills fueling a match-sealing 25-16 set triumph.

While Tuesday night's showcase failed to deliver a long-awaited victory to the Trojans, the visitors did turn homeward in possession of voluminous quantities of silver lining for their efforts. After totaling a pair of kills through his first two matches, crafty attacker Halvorson combusted for five in by far his foremost opus of the young season. Perry continued to build on his solid campaign, with an efficient five-kill performance, and Losinger again provided the backbone to the Trinity unit, posting eight assists, eight digs, a kill, and an ace.

The Trojans (0-4) will aim to build on their solid form as they return home to Van Dixhorn Arena to square off with conference opponent Viterbo University on Friday, February 3, at 7 o'clock p.m.
