Trojans defeated by V-Hawks despite balanced attack

BANNOCKBURN, IL—The Trojans mounted a cohesive effort that saw several players get their moment in the sun, but despite multiple spurts of inspired play, they were defeated by the visiting V-Hawks of Viterbo University at Van Dixhorn Arena on Friday night.

The Trojans got off to a blistering start, ambushing the visitors with a spirited opening that included a span of six consecutive Trinity tallies, leading to a 13-7 TIU edge. The Trojans were still maintaining a substantial 16-11 advantage as the set wound down, but the V-Hawks clicked into gear in an instant, denying Trinity their second set win of the year, closing the set by scoring 14 of the final 15 points and each of the last nine. Matthew Perry led the way with three kills for Trinity in a set where four Trojans notched kills and the squad tallied their fourth highest single set hitting percentage of the campaign.

The early portion of the second stanza was a see-saw affair, with the conference rivals swapping the advantage with neither squad able to score thrice consecutively as Viterbo clung to a 10-9 edge. That all changed when the V-Hawks detonated for six successive scores before stretching the lead to 18-10. Sensing the urgency, the Trojans conjured up an explosive four point run that trimmed the visitors' lead to a mere four points, but Viterbo stayed the course and claimed the set by a 25-17 margin to establish an imposing 2-0 edge in the match.

What would prove to be the final set of the evening never broke the Trojans' way, but that didn't stop them from giving the Trinity faithful something to cheer about, notching eight kills in a losing effort. After claiming the first two scores of the frame, Trinity fell off the pace, conceding a 9-3 advantage to Viterbo. While Trinity couldn't reel in the streaking V-Hawks, they showed their attacking prowess as five different Trojans recorded a kill. Jaylen Thompson took center stage for the Trojans, raining down a trio of finishers, but Viterbo finished off the Trojans with a 25-12 set triumph to salt away an entertaining evening.

Though the Trojans were again denied a monumental first victory, their galvanized group effort continues to give Trinity supporters reason for hope. The blue-and-white's multi-pronged offensive was piloted by Perry (five kills, two solo blocks), Thompson (four kills, one solo block), Paul Martinez (four kills, one ace, team-high seven digs), and Soren Halvorson (three kills). Setter Ethan Losinger continued to be hub of the Trojan attack, totaling a pair each of kills and blocks while doling out a team-high 10 dimes to his comrades.

The Trojans (0-5, 0-3 CCAC) will set off on a two-game excursion away from the confines of Van Dixhorn, starting with another conference showdown, this one against the Eagles of Judson University on the evening of Thursday, February 9.
