Trojans overcome by Tigers despite thrilling second set

BANNOCKBURN, IL—The Trojans showcased the ability to stand toe-to-toe with the very best the CCAC has to offer, but what they had in ability they lacked in consistency during Tuesday night's clash, ultimately falling to the visiting Tigers of Olivet Nazarene University in straight sets.

The Trojans came out flat in the initial frame, conceding the first four tallies. Freshman attacker Evin Ovie subsequently nabbed his second career kill to jump start the Trojans, who were waylaid by a storm of Olivet scores, resulting in an 18-2 Tiger edge. The Trojans posted a strong closing run, notching five points on eight sequences down the stretch, but the Tigers regained their rhythm and put an end to the opening set, claiming it by a 25-8 score.

The Trojans came out with an entirely different look in set two, ambushing the visitors and maintaining a slim margin in the early stages of the frame, leading to a 9-7 Trojan advantage. The Tigers found their footing, sandwiching six consecutive tallies around a Trojan timeout. Trinity was not to be denied however, as they came all the way back on the merits of Matthew Perry's exploits, as the freshman recorded two kills and an ace to reignite the Trojan offensive. Trinity capitalized on a series of Olivet miscues to create a buzz of excitement in the air as they clung to a 22-18 advantage, but Olivet closed on a blistering 7-0 run to claim the set and a commanding 2-0 edge in the match.

The Trojans were unable to rekindle the fire that had sparked the epic set two clash, as despite veteran Soren Halvorson grabbing a kill to put the stanza in motion, the Tigers quickly raced to a double-digit lead. The Trojans continued to fight, but were overmatched in what would prove to be the final set, falling by a 25-5 score.

While the Trojans (0-8) were unable to best their accomplished conference foe, they did show that, when at their best, they have the ability to tangle with anyone in a competent fashion. They'll aim to garner more consistency when they make the quick turnaround to battle St. Xavier in Chicago, IL, on Thursday.
