TIU falls in CCAC clash with the Lakers

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Last night the Trojans were back on their home court as conference rival Roosevelt University visited Van Dixhorn Arena. Ultimately, TIU came up short as they fell in straight sets to the Lakers.

From the start, the Lakers hit a 1-11 run, broken up by a smashing kill from freshman Jaylen Thompson. Capitalizing on a couple of errors by the visitors, the Trojans strung together a few points to cut the deficit but struggled to stay within striking distance as the Lakers held them to a seven or more shortfall throughout. Roosevelt closed out the set victorious, 15-25.

In the second set, the Trojans and Lakers played a game of tug of war as they traded points every serve until Roosevelt grabbed consecutive points at 5-6. Trinity evened the score at 7-7 with a thrilling attack from freshman Evin Ovie that found the gym floor on Roosevelt's side and drew a shout from the crowd. The Lakers lit up for a 7-0 run and TIU was unable to recover. Matthew Perry and Thompson notched another kill each as the Trojans benefited from a plethora of Lakers' miscues, but in the end fell 16-25.

Trinity kept it close again in the early game, opening the stanza with another kill from Perry. The Lakers equalized at 4-4 then hit a short run of three more before the Trojans called for time. Out of the break, Trinity benefited from a lack of focus as the Lakers wavered with an attack error, but quickly their foe regained composure for another eight point run to leave the Trojans with a ten point mountain to climb. Despite jovial team spirit and the selfless dives across the court and nearly into the bleachers, the Trojans lost in three.

Jaret Wiler recorded a career high eight digs while Matthew Perry led with five kills and four solo blocks. Ethan Losinger, the team's steady setter, dished out nine assists on the night.

Trinity(0-9) is home again on Friday night for a rescheduled match-up with Saint Xavier, originally scheduled for last week during the inclement weather in Chicagoland. The game is set for 7:00pm in Van Dixhorn Arena.
