Short-handed Trojans forced to settle for split vs. Roosevelt

BANNOCKBURN, IL—When the Trojans blasted the Roosevelt Lakers at Chicago's Goodman Center on November 19th for their first conference victory, Trinity and first year Head Coach Courtney Peay had an entirely different hand of resources to deploy. On Saturday, forced to fend without their three leading scorers, the Trojans failed to replicate the result, but that didn't stop them from posting a competitive effort and defending Van Dixhorn with pride.

The Trojans limped out of the hangar in the opening quarter, sustaining a 24-point Laker onslaught while only generating two field goals in the frame. Despite the slow start, the period was not entirely devoid of highlights, as sharpshooting guard Amber Reynolds continued to shoulder the load offensively for the undermanned Trinity squad, splashing home a triple and pouring in five of the Trojans' tallies. Veteran forward Breleigh Gula also was reinserted into the Trojan lineup after a two-game absence, with the reliable post scorer recalibrating her season by making four trips to the charity stripe and getting on the scoresheet for the first time since the first quarter of the Trojans' January 25 clash with Governors State. In spite of those contributions, the Trojans still emerged from the quarter nursing a significant 16-point deficit.

The early bludgeoning did nothing to dampen the Trojans' competitive fire, as Trinity refocused and responded with a strong second quarter effort. Kaiya Albert led the way, draining a two, a three, and a pair of free throws to post a versatile and efficient seven-point stanza. Hattie Black also continued her late-season renaissance, canning a triple of her own along with an and-one finish to provide production and pump energy into the Trinity unit. Promising youngster Twanasia Graves also netted a triple, giving the Trojans a remarkable 3-for-6 mark from deep for the period. The long-range barrage helped the Trojans keep pace, but they still trailed at the halftime buzzer by a 43-26 margin.

Unfortunately, the Trojans' momentum ground to a halt in the third quarter, as the team endured a 4-for-17 shooting slump for the duration of the frame. The team did take advantage of their rival's aggression, however, drilling 7-of-8 attempts from the free throw line. Audree Peck, the squad's leading rebounder, reminded the Trojan faithful of the characteristics that make her a handful in the paint on a nightly basis, swallowing up a pair of rebounds and converting all four of her free throw attempts in a six-point quarter. Despite Peck's best efforts, an offensive blitz from the Lakers put the home squad in a cavernous hole, trailing by a 72-41 reckoning.

Seeking to stem the tide of Roosevelt's fervent attack, the Trojans responded with an impressive defensive stand in the game's final period. The Trojans limited their opponent to just two made baskets, permitting a mere ten Laker points while holding Roosevelt to a tick over 15 percent from the field. Trinity also showcased their sustained tenacity by outrebounding the Lakers 10-7 over the final 10 minutes of play, but time ran out on the Trojans, who were handed an 82-48 defeat.

Despite the disappointing outcome, the Trojans enjoyed a myriad of contributions to the cause, with Albert (ten points, four steals), Gula (nine points), Peck (eight points, six rebounds), Reynolds (eight points, five assists), and Black (eight points, four rebounds) shining for Trinity. They'll look to parlay that individual momentum into results while awaiting reinforcements for the stretch run.

The Trojans (3-20, 1-15 CCAC) will have another go at snapping their five-game skid while seeking their first home victory of the campaign when they square off with the Redhawks of Indiana University Northwest at Van Dixhorn on the night of Wednesday, February 8.
