Trojans take one in series with Eagles

ELGIN, Ill. — Trinity took on their latest CCAC foe as they hit the road for Judson University. With a doubleheader on Monday, followed by a single game on Tuesday, the Trojans returned home 1-2 on the series.

Game One: TIU 2, JU 10
After a solid defensive showing by both teams in the first inning, each holding the other to just three batters, the Judson offense let loose in the second inning as they jumped ahead nine runs.

A quiet middle portion of the game became heated again in the sixth inning as the Trojans took advantage of pitching miscues from the Eagles and snatched three bases to add two runs to the scoreboard. The Eagles responded in the bottom of the inning, adding one more to their total.

Unable to rally in the seventh inning, the Trojans fell in the opening game of the doubleheader.

Brady Popovich took the loss for TIU, with Seth Lewallen and Elisa Marquez also earning time on the mound.

Game Two: TIU 4, JU 5
Judson opened the scoring in the first inning with a single run before the Trojans knotted the score again in the top of the third. Jimmy Cisneros led off from the batter's box with a single to right field, before some clever baserunning advanced his position. Another single to right field, this time from Julius Torres, resulted in the RBI and a tied score at 1-1.

A Trojan error and pair of hits from the Eagles gave their rival a two run advantage in the bottom of the fourth inning before the game slowed down with just three hits in three innings. The floodgates opened for Trinity in the top of the eighth as they collected four hits and converted for three runs. Jonathan Kumai, Seth Lewallen, and Max Amendt each recorded singles while Brady Popovich doubled to right field.

In the final inning, the Trojans struggled to continue the offensive momentum and were held to four batters as the Eagles rallied for a trio of hits to sweep the doubleheader.

Game Three: TIU 10, JU 3
Trinity scored the first run of the game as Blake Lazaris and Jonathan Kumai assembled back to back doubles.

The Eagles benefited from a Trojan throwing error then added a single to retake the lead 2-1 in the second inning.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Trojans collected five hits and three runs as they started to break free from the Eagles grasp. Lazaris recorded another double, while Kumai, Seth Lewallen, and Jimmy Cisneros each tacked on a base hit.

Extending their lead even further, Trinity scored five more runs in the bottom of the fifth as the accuracy of the Eagles hurler began to dwindle. In a bases loaded situation, Kumai stepped up to the plate with his seventh double of the season to ultimately propel the Trojans lead out of the Eagles reach.

Both teams grabbed one additional run in the seventh inning, but the Trojan defense otherwise stood firm to claim their first CCAC victory of the season.

Max Amendt recorded the win for the Trojans, throwing 8.2 innings while allowing nine hits and three runs.

The Trojans(11-11, 1-4)  have a short turnaround as they hit the road again on Friday morning for an afternoon ballgame in South Bend, Indiana against the Titans of IUSB. Opening pitch is slated for 2:00pm eastern.
