CHICAGO, Ill. — Yesterday afternoon the Trojans took a short trip downtown for a relocated game at Saint Xavier University after the TIU Softball Field was deemed unfit. The Cougars, receiving votes in the national poll and leading the CCAC, proved to be an insurmountable challenge for TIU as they dropped both games of the doubleheader, succumbing to the run rule in the first outing.
Game One: TIU 0, SXU 17
The Trojans looked to start well, sending the first two Cougar hopefuls back to the dugout with solid defensive play. Their fortunes changed with the third batter, as Saint Xavier smacked a home run then piled on two additional runs on four hits to take an early three run lead.
While Trinity was able to collect fifteen put outs on the defensive side of the game, the Trojans struggled against the junior Cougar pitcher who threw a perfect game for Saint Xavier. Despite TIU's best efforts, the Saint Xavier offense was too much to handle as they scored multiple runs each inning, ultimately ending the game via run rule after the fifth inning.
Game Two: TIU 0, SXU 8
Undeterred by the nature of the previous game, the Trojans regrouped and held the Cougars to three in the first inning while receiving the same treatment in the home half.
Freshman Gigi Redman threw a complete game for the Trojans, but it didn't take long for the Cougars to figure out the dealer as they collected three hits in the second inning and jumped ahead two runs.
Trinity recorded one lone hit in the bottom of the second as Josie Nelson sent a base hit to right field, but the Trojans were otherwise held back from any offensive gain as the Cougars pitched a near-perfect game again in the second outing.
The Trojans(2-18, 0-6) are on the road again today for a rescheduled match-up with the Titans of IU South Bend. The conference battle is slated for 3:00/5:00pm ET in Indiana.
