Trojans take non-conference doubleheader over Maranatha

WHEELING, Ill. — Early yesterday morning the Trojans took a short trip south to their home away from home field at Heritage Sports Park for a second doubleheader against the Sabercats of Maranatha Baptist University. In a pair of seven inning contests, Trinity walked away with the sweep as they handed their foe decisive defeat in each game.

Game One: TIU 6, MBU 1
TIU opened in the first inning with one run to take the early lead before both teams went scoreless for two innings. The Sabercats managed to grab two hits from Ethan Oskroba, the junior hurler for TIU, and converted one run on the scoreboard to tie the game. Not for long though, as the Trojans retook the lead by capitalizing on a fielding error and stolen base.

While Trinity continued to add to the scoreboard in each remaining inning, Oskroba retired the Sabercats every inning in short order to ensure the Trojans' victory. Jonathan Kumai collected a double to lead off in the fifth, followed by Riley Murphy and Jimmy Cisneros with singles and Brady Popovich gave a sac fly to score the Trojans' fourth run. Maranatha Baptist struggled from the mound in the sixth, walking four batters and giving up a 2 RBI triple from the hands of Blake Lazaris to secure the final score.

Oskroba earned his second win of the season, going the distance in both outings.

Game Two:
TIU 13, MBU 4
The Trojans carried momentum into game two and turned it up a notch, taking a six run lead over the Sabercats in the home half of the first inning. Bats rolling, TIU scattered five hits and stole two bases to take a dominant start.

On the mound for Trinity, sophomore Joseph Plascencia held the Sabercats in check in the second inning, catching the third batter looking to end the frame. The Trojans kept rolling, racking up four more hits and adding two runs to give themselves an eight run lead.

Maranatha Baptist started to push back in the third inning, scoring three runs and taking two hits from the Trojan defense. They would add another in the top of the fifth, but to no avail as the Trojans jumped ahead three more in the same stanza after recording four hits and bagging two more stolen bases. For insurance, Trinity scored two more in the bottom of the sixth after a triple from Oskroba and sac fly from Seth Lewallen.

Hurler Joseph Plascencia recorded his third win of the season, going 5.1 innings and striking out two. Jonathan Kumai went 3-3 with three stolen bases while Blake Lazaris (2-4) grabbed a pair of doubles and 3 RBI.
