Box Score 2 LEESBURG, Fla. -- Junior
A.J. Bruner made his season debut in a big way, pitching a complete game while going 4-for-4 at the plate in Trinity International's 13-5 win over Cairn (Pa.), as part of a doubleheader split with the Highlanders, Monday morning at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
Bruner threw 95 pitches over all seven innings, scattering six hits and allowing just one earned run while striking out two. At the plate, Bruner collected two RBI and scored a run while batting 1.000 on the day.
The Trojans jumped out early, scoring three runs in the top of the first after
Colt Foerch and
Cameron Stanley set the table with a pair of leadoff singles. Bruner drove in the first run with a sac fly, then
Jon Debowey scored Stanley with his two-out single.
Adam Vignola put the third run on the board with a triple in the next at-bat, scoring Debowey.
Cairn answered with one run in the bottom of the first, but the Trojans responded with a pair of runs in the 4th, and an eight-run outburst in the 5th.
Jeff Lindberg and
Justin VanderNaald recorded runs in the 4th inning, while in the 5th, seven different Trojans touched home plate, including
Adam Gomski, who scored twice after hitting two singles in the same inning. Bruner also had two base hits in the frame, with a single and triple. Cairn rallied in the bottom of the 7th, with four runs, resulting in the 13-5 final score.
In game two, the Highlanders took an early lead, with three runs in the 1st inning, then doubled their lead with three more in the top of the 4th. TIU had their biggest rally in the 5th, with Lindberg's one-out double setting up Stanley to put Trinity on the board with a single in the next at bat. Gomski and Bruner drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, then Debowey brought in the second run of the frame with a sac fly. Eddie Piotrowski made it a two-run game with his two-out single to close out the inning.
The Trojans nearly tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, after Gomski scored on Jon Grotelueschen's two-out single with the bases loaded. Debowey came around to try and score the tying run, but was thrown out at the plate to end the game.
Trinity will be back at it early tomorrow morning, with a non-conference matchup with Purdue-Calumet from Auburndale, Fla. The single, 9-inning contest will kick off at 8:00 a.m. Central.
