Box Score 3 PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. - Competing in the final CCAC Crossover of the season the TIU Volleyball team went 1-2 on thw weekend, losing 3-0 to Trinity Christian (8-25,13-25,17-25) and 3-0 to Olivet Nazarene (16-25,24-26,18-25) while defeating Governors State 3-0 (25-16,25-14,25-16) on Saturday.
The Trojans opened the Crossover with a pair of tough matchups against two of the top teams in the CCACÂ in TCC and ONU. In the opening match against TCC the Trojans never seemed to get things going offensively, having no players finish with more than five kills.
Katelyn Sommers led the way for TIU, finishing just shy of a double-double, registering 19 assists and 9 digs.
In the nightcap on Friday the Trojans played well against Olivet, but the offensive firepower of ONU was just too much for the Trojans to come away with a victory. ONU came out of the gates quickly, taking the first set 25-16. The Trojans fought back and nearely evened the match at one set a piece but eventually fell in the second set 26-24. With a 2-0 lead the Tigers closed out the match with a 25-18 third set victory.
Though the offense struggled the defense once again played well, as Sommers tallied a double-double with 23 assists and 18 digs, while
Penina Sao led TIU on the defensive side of things with 24 digs.
In their lone match on Saturday the Trojans cruised to a 3-0 victory over Governors State to round out the weekend. It was a dominant performance from the get go for TIU, and the Trojans were led by the strong play of Freshman
Madeline Decker. Decker finished the night with 18 kills, leading all players.
The Trojans were yet again strong defensively having three players finish the match with 10-plus kills. Sommers and
Hannah Matthew each tallied 10 while Sao added 16.
The Trojans will close out the season this coming Thursday when they host Robert Morris University on Senior Night at 7 pm.
