Box Score The Trinity International University volleyball team kicked off the 2019 season on the road, competing in four matches on August 30 and 31 at the MidAmerica Nazarene Tournament in Olathe, Kansas.
In their opening game Friday morning against Presentation College (S.D.), sophomore Matty Hawkins led the match with 14 kills and a .619 attack percentage as TIU opened up the tournament with a three game sweep of the Saints, 25-19, 25-20, 25-20. Junior setter Jacqueline Decker also dished up 16 assists in the win.
The Trojans faced a tough challenge in their second match as they took on eighth-ranked Midland (Neb.). Despite falling in straight games, 12-25, 16-25, 21-25, TIU shown resilience in the third set as they tried to extend the match. Madeline Decker led the Trojan attack with seven kills and five digs.
On Saturday, TIU opened the day up against Doane (Neb.). Despite another strong attack game by Hawkins, and 12 digs from Brianna Torres, the Trojans dropped all three games in close fashion, 21-25, 23-25, 20-25.
To close out the tournament, the Trojans faced Evangel out of Missouri in the afternoon. TIU won the opening game 25-22, before losing the next three 18-25, 14-25, 11-25. Decker and Sara Andric posted 11 kills each, while Torres notched three aces serves in the match, and Penina Sao recorded 24 digs.
The Trojans will travel to face fifth-ranked Viterbo (Wisc.) on Tuesday, August 27 for their first true road game of the season at 6:00 PM.
