DEERFIELD — Trinity International University Athletics Department mourns the loss of the incoming football player, Avery Gilbert (Lake Villa, IL) who suddenly and tragically passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2022.
Gilbert graduated in 2022 from Grayslake North High School where he ran track and field. Gilbert was known for his infectious energy, generosity, and joy. His smile lit up any room he walked into, he was dedicated to improving each day, and he tried to make everyone he met feel welcome. From the very first day he stepped on campus, Gilbert was "all in," ready to participate in community life and to be the best student and best wide receiver he could be.
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of incoming freshman Avery Gilbert. As a program, we are devastated, as Avery was just beginning his collegiate career," said Head Football Coach Willie Tillman. "I'd like to extend my deepest condolences to Avery's family and loved ones and will provide my full support to those who need it. We are working with the University to ensure that our student-athletes have the emotional support they need. Through love and prayer, we will come together as a university."
The 2022 Trojan football season will be dedicated to Gilbert and we honor his number #87.
"Avery was my brother and showed me what strength and perseverance genuinely mean in this life," said teammate and best friend
Josh Real. "He encouraged everyone to harbor strength, courage, and integrity and, most importantly, to show up for themselves every day—no matter the circumstance. He lived by the quote 'Never Give Up, Never Surrender,' and anyone who loved Avery should know that he is rooting for them in their pursuits of happiness."
The Celebration of Life service will take place on Thursday, August 18, 2022, at the Village Church of Lincolnshire. Visitation will be from 5:00-6:00 pm, the funeral service will be from 6:00-7:30 pm, with a cremation ceremony to follow.
The Real family have started a GoFundMe campaign on behalf of Gilbert's loved ones, to cover the costs of his memorial service.
