Softball drop close one to Cougars, and the clock, in Florida finale

Box Score CLERMONT, Fla. -- Eight different Trojans collected a hit, including three multi-hit performances, but a late rally from the St. Francis (Ind.) Cougars dealt TIU a 9-6 loss Wednesday night, in the final day of their Florida spring break trip. Adding insult to injury, Trinity held a lead in what would have been the Florida finale over Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.), but because of field delays due to weather, the game could not be completed in time to give the Trojans their first win of the season.

Box Score | Season Stats

After the Cougars scored the first run of the day in the top of the 1st, the Trojans answered in a big way, putting up five runs in the bottom half of the frame. With a pair of leadoff walks, Tori Livingston loaded the bases with a single up the middle, before Jamie Stanton tied the game with her RBI single through the left side of the infield. Danielle Donorovich then doubled in the next at-bat, giving TIU a two-run lead. RBI singles from Emily Doomis and Breanna Hansen made it a 5-1 lead at the end of the 1st.

St. Francis went back into the lead in the 3rd, however, hanging five runs on the Trojans themselves, to take a 6-5 edge. The Cougars tacked on another run in the 5th, and two more in the 6th, to build a 9-5 advantage.

Trinity's best chance to rally came in the bottom of the 6th, after a pair of Cougar errors, and another single from Stanton loaded the bases with one out. Emily Doomis picked up her second RBI of the day with a single through the left side, scoring her sister Alyssa from third. That would be all the Trojans would get, however, leaving the bases loaded while still down two.

In what would have been the second game of the day, Trinity rallied with four straight doubles in the top of the 5th inning to take a lead over Hannibal-LaGrange. The game could not get through the 5th to be declared an official game before the drop-dead time to end the game, which started hours late due to weather delays and previous games running long at the field.

Valerie D'Ambrosio, Stanton, and Emily Doomis all collected two hits on the day, while Donorovich and Doomis picked up two RBI each.

Alyssa Doomis continues her streak of reaching base in every game this season, going 1-for-5 with two runs scored. D'Ambrosio also increases her hitting streak to five straight games.

Breanna Hansen pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief, striking out two while not allowing an earned run.

Trinity will now return home for the scheduled CCAC and home opener, next Thursday, March 19. The Trojans will play host to the Purdue-North Central Panthers, for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
