Quick Notes
• Trinity International hits the road this week, for a pair of CCAC matchups as the 2015-16 regular season enters its final month. The Trojans head to Robert Morris for a mid-week matchup, before facing No. 2 St. Francis on Saturday.
• Both games will be streamed online at TIUTrojans.com. Wednesday night's game at Robert Morris is free, but Saturday's game at St. Francis will include a $4.99 pay-per-view fee.
• The Trojans and Eagles are currently tied for 10th in the CCAC standings, just 1.5 games behind 8th-place Holy Cross. The top eight teams earn a berth into the CCAC Tournament, beginning on Feb. 23.
• Two players are averaging double figures for TIU this season, with senior guard JaToya Woods scoring a team-high 18.3 points per game. Junior Sarina Falvo has contributed 10.7 points per game while shooting a team-leading 32.6% from three-point range in her first season as a Trojan.
• With a pair of wins this week, Trinity can surpass the .500 mark on the road; the Trojans hold a 3-4 record in games this season away from Van Dixhorn Arena.
• TIU ranks 4th in NAIA D-II with a team average of 13.5 steals per game, and are 12th nationally with 229 total steals.
• Defensively, the Trojans allow 69.2 points per game, good for 11th in the CCAC. TIU opponents have shot 37.3% from the field, ranking the Trojan defense 7th in the conference, and 34th in the NAIA.
• The Trojans' win over Maranatha Baptist (Wisc.) on December 10th was head coach Laurel Wartluft's 350th career victory. Wartluft is one of 15 active coaches in the NAIA Division II with 350 or more victories.
• Trinity's seven victories this year are the most for the Trojans since 2012-13. The Trojans have more wins this season than in the past two years combined
• Robert Morris snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday with a 89-40 home win over Calumet St. Joseph. The Eagles hold a 3-3 record this year at the RMU Athletics Center.
• St. Francis are ranked No. 2 in the NAIA Coaches' Poll released Jan. 12, thanks to their 16-1 start this season, but lost two straight to Olivet Nazarene and St. Ambrose last week before rebounding with a win over Indiana-Northwest Monday night.
Series History with RMU
• The Trojans and Eagles will meet for the 11th time in the past 12 seasons on Wednesday, with Robert Morris holding an 8-2 advantage in the all-time series.
• The Trojans won the first two matchups over RMU in 2004, but have since dropped eight straight to the Eagles.
Series History with USF
• Trinity and St. Francis have met up ten times since the 2004-05 season, with the Saints holding a 7-3 advantage in the series.
• USF have claimed four of the last five wins over the Trojans, dating back to 2011-12.
• The Trojans earned a one-point victory over USF back on Feb. 2, 2013, but have fallen in each of their annual matchups the past two seasons.
Last Time Out vs. Robert Morris
• Trinity's lone senior Daja Johnson finished with a team-high 16 points, coming up just shy of her career best in her final home game, but a rally from Robert Morris in the final minutes dealt the Trojans a 68-48 loss on Feb. 19, 2015 in Van Dixhorn Arena.
• Both sides traded the lead back and forth in the opening minutes, with a three-pointer from Johnson at the 17:34 mark edged the Trojans to the front, 7-6. Robert Morris answered with 19 unanswered points over the next ten minutes, to claim a 25-7 lead with 7:45 to play in the first half. The Trojans nearly erased the entire deficit before halftime however, closing the first half with the final nine points to make it a 32-30 halftime lead for Robert Morris.
• The Eagles, went on another big run, scoring 12 straight to take a 44-32 edge with 15 minutes to play. TIU would use a 7-0 run, fueled by four points from JaToya Woods, to close the gap again, 46-42 with 8:05 to play, but couldn't complete the comeback, scoring just six points the rest of the game as RMU pulled away.
Last Time Out vs. St. Francis
• Forward Basha Ramsey finished with a game-high 23 points, as Trinity held a brief second-half lead, but the Trojan offense struggled down the stretch, falling on the road to the Saints, 83-59, in the 2014-15 season finale.
• Down 19 in the first half, TIU slowly chipped away at the lead, until St. Francis went into the break with just a one-point edge, 36-35.
• Daja Johnson's three-pointer with 14:40 to play gave the Trojans their first lead of the night, but Cristina Ekhomu scored on the next possession to give USF a lead they would hold the rest of the way.Â
National Leaders
• The Trojans are one of the better defensive units in the NAIA this season. Trinity ranks among the top 48 teams in four different defensive categories.
• Individually, senior JaToya Woods currently holds the third-highest steals-per-game average in the NAIA, with 3.2 per game.
• Freshman forward Parris Bryant is the NAIA's national leader among freshman, and ranks 13th in the nation overall, with 2.14 blocks per game. Bryant is also 22nd in total blocks, with 30.
Player of the Week
• On Dec. 15, junior guard Sarina Falvo was named the CCAC Player of the Week, as well as the NCCAA National Player of the Week.
• Falvo recorded a career-high 34 points in the win over the Calumet St. Joseph on Dec. 12, the highest single-game point total for a Trojan since the 2010-11 season. The Cairns, Australia native knocked down eight three-pointers, matching the highest total of any player in the NAIA D-II at that point in the season.
• The Player of the Week award is the first for Trinity International women's basketball in nearly five years, when Melanie Duplessis was selected Player of the Week on Feb. 8, 2011. That season, the Trojans reached the CCAC Tournament simifinals, and qualified for the NCCAA National Tournament.
1,000 Point Club
• Since 2003-04, four Trojans have reached 1,000 career points, most recently Brittany Simon (2009-13), with 1,019 points.
• JaToya Woods is the active career leader in scoring, with 787 points. With 24 points in the win over Maranatha Baptist on Dec. 10, Woods moved into the program's top ten scoring list, dating back to the '03-'04 season.
• With 18 points in the win at Trinity Christian on Jan. 9, Woods moved into 6th on the list, surpassing Cassie Glendenning (2009-12).
Trojan Program History
• Head Coach Laurel Wartluft is one of the winningest active head coaches in the NAIA; Wartluft has collected 353 wins over her 25 years as a head coach.
• TIU has made two appearances at the NAIA Women's Basketball Championship, in 1992-93, and 1994-95. The Trojans lost in the first round both times, to College of the Ozarks (Mo.) in 1993, and Western Oregon in 1995.
• Since 2003-04, TIU has posted an overall record of 160-234 (.406).
•Trinity International has never appeared in the NAIA Coaches Poll, since it's debut in 1999-00.
