Box Score DEERFIELD, Ill. - The TIU Football team had a tough time moving the ball offensively on Saturday, suffering a 12-7 loss on a rainy Senior Day afternoon.
On their opening drive of the afternoon the Trojans struggled to find their groove offensively, quickly going three and out right out of the gate.
After a short Trojan punt the Bee's would take over at midfield, and the Trojans defense came up big. After a 10 play drive, moving it all the way down into the red zone the Trojans came up with a few big stops from
Troy Donovan and
Darrius Outland to force an SAU punt.
After the previous punt was downed inside the two yard line the SAU defense came up big. Deontae Curry took down
Isaac Branch inside the end zone, forcing a safety and giving Ambrose a 2-0 lead. On the ensuing drive the Bee's rattled off a 7 play 40 yard drive to increase the lead to 9-0.
On the next 7 combined drives between the two teams, neither side was able to find the score sheet with both defenses and elements playing a factor into the offensive struggles.
After 30 minutes of play both sides came out in the second half looking to turn things around offensively, but the Trojans and Bee's continued to struggle.
A scoreless third quarter gave the Trojans life moving into the final frame of the game. After a few key stops midway through the quarter
Leland Orrin came up with an interception after
Bradley Mowbray disruppted Jake Romani's throw.
Following the INT from Orrin, QB
Danny Mattero led the Trojans on a 12 play 70 yard drive that ended with the Senior connecting with
Chris Wolcott on an eight yard pass, making it 12-7.
After the score the Trojans attempted an onside kick, giving SAU the ball back with two minutes left. After yet another Trojan defensive stop, TIU had the opportunity for one final possesion but turned the ball over on downs, ending the game.
Defensively for the Trojans, Mowbray racked up 16 tackles and two pass breakups, while
Mauricio Portillo added 15 tackles of his own.
The Trojans will travel to Joliet next weekend to take on St. Francis in their final game of the season at 1 pm.
