Walton named NCCAA Defensive Player of the Year

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) has released their All-NCCAA and Player of the Year selections for the 2022 season. Sensational freshman Jeremy Walton was named Defensive Player of the Year, a fitting award for the resume accrued by the first year player.

Walton constructed a remarkable resume in his debut collegiate season in a manner that looked more like a veteran. His consistency in bursting through the opposing pass protection unit forced hasty decisions in the pass game while his ability to read the game allowed him coverage sideline to sideline in chasing down would-be ball carriers.

Throughout the season, Walton tallied 82 tackles(53 solo, 29 assists), 12 sacks and 21.5 tackles for loss while dismantling multiple TIU records in the process: he holds the single season record for most sacks, while tying ninth in forced fumbles and third in tackles for loss. In the career categories, he places sixth for the most sacks in TIU history.

His intuitive ability to find the gap to the opposing quarterback allowed him to lead not only the Trojans, but the entire MSFA in sacks and tackles for loss. Following a standout performance against Saint Xavier in late October with nine tackles and 1.5 sacks, Walton was named NCCAA Defensive Player of the Week.

Interim Head Coach Keith Otis adds his excitement in Walton's Defensive Player of the Year recognition, "Jeremy had an absolutely incredible true freshman season. His work ethic, consistency, and tenacity spoke so loudly that he was voted by the coaching staff as a team captain after four games in the season. He represented TIU with class and for that we're thankful."

Walton's designation as Defensive Player of the Year is the first in TIU Football history.
