Five Trojans selected for MSFA all-conference honors

CHICAGO, Ill.— The Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) released their all-conference selections for the Midwest League on Monday afternoon, following the completion of the 2022 regular season. Five Trojans were selected for their standout play on the gridiron this season, marking the fourth consecutive season TIU has had at least four players honored. Wide receiver Cameron Jones was named to the league's first team offense, while defensive lineman Jeremy Walton was chosen for second team defense. Linebacker Deven Arevalo, offensive lineman Jaydon Fett, and punter Cameron Outlaw also received honorable mentions.

Jones, a freshman from Richland Hills, Texas, earned his first all-conference honor after a spectacular freshman year logging 62 receptions for a total of 941 yards. Averaging 94.1 yards per game, Jones ranked first in the MSFA.  After his collegiate debut against Hastings in August, Jones was awarded NCCAA Offensive Football Student-Athlete of the Week for his resume of 13 receptions for 131 yards as well as a 44 yard kick return. Throughout the season, Jones tallied four receiving touchdowns, one rushing and one punt return. The latter touchdown coming against Taylor University at 74 yards returned set a new school record, breaking the previous record of 65 yards set in 1995.

Walton, a freshman from Gurnee, Illinois, earned his first all-conference honor after a dominant freshman year leading the MSFA in sacks with a total of twelve. Throughout the season, Walton tallied 82 tackles, 53 solo and 29 assists and 21.5 tackles for loss while tackling multiple TIU records in the process. Walton claims the single season record for sacks and places sixth in the career category, while moving into third in tackles for loss single season and seventh in the career category. After a standout performance against Saint Xavier in October with nine tackles and 1.5 sacks, Walton was named NCCAA Defensive Player of the Week.

Arevalo, a freshman from Houston, Texas, earned all-league honorable mention after a solid collegiate debut. Grabbing 59 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack, Arevalo played in all eleven games for the Trojans. Arevalo snatched two interceptions throughout the season and in the final game of the season, he recovered a fumble for 35 yards.

Fett, a junior from Tacoma, Washington, garnered his first all-conference honorable mention as a member of the offensive line that provided for 10 rushing touchdowns on 1,051 yards as well as eight touchdowns and 1,817 passing yards. Fett also recorded one solo tackle at Missouri Baptist last month.

Outlaw, a graduate student from Seminole, Florida, grabbed his first all-conference honorable mention following a stellar season as kicker and punter for the Trojans. Averaging 33.7 yards per punt, Outlaw totaled 1,988 yards on 59 attempts. His longest punt came against Saint Xavier in October at 62 yards. Outlaw ranks in the top ten of TIU history in both single season and career records for extra points, extra point attempts, punts, punt yards, punting average and punts inside 20.

The Trojans finished the 2022 season with a record of 1-10, and 1-6 in league play.
