Women's Basketball prepares for rematch with Sabercats

Quick Notes

• Trinity International will head north on Tuesday night, as the Trojans step out of conference play to take on the Maranatha Baptist (Wisc.) Sabercats.

• The Trojans are coming off of a 71-55 home loss to 16th-ranked Cardinal Stritch on Saturday, and will look to snap an three-game slide this week.
• Senior guard Sarina Falvo leads the team with 10.8 points per game this season. Falvo was one of two Trojans with a team-high 11 points in Wednesday's game at St. Ambrose, and has two double-figure performances in the last three games.
• Junior guard Tashyra Burrough is averaging 8.5 points per game this year, but finished the month of January with an average of 10.8 points in the last six games, including a career-high 21 at Olivet Nazarene on Jan. 14. Burroughs posted 15 points on 4-of-9 shooting from three-point range in the win over Maranatha Baptist (Wisc.) on Feb. 2.
• Senior Rayelle Ross is third in scoring for the Trojans, with 8.3 points per game. With 20 points in the win over Maranatha Baptist and 12 points against Roosevelt, Ross scored double figures in two straight games for the first time since Nov. 12-16. Ross is averaging 12.3 points per game in her last four appearances.
• Senior point guard Arielle Miree is shooting a team-best 34.9% from three-point range while leading the Trojans with 3.0 assists per game. Miree posted 11 points in Saturday's game with Cardinal Stritch, her highest point total since the win over Calumet St. Joseph on Dec. 10, when she scored a career-high 26.
• After missing the first eight games of the season to injury, Basha Ramsey has averaged 6.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. Ramsey posted 11 points against Cardinal Stritch on Saturday, and has now recorded at least two assists in each of the past six games.
• As a team, the Trojans rank 24th in the NAIA in free throw shooting, connecting at the charity stripe with a .729 percentage. Trinity reached the 90% mark in back-to-back games on Jan. 25-28, going 9-for-10 at the line against #4 St. Xavier, and 11-for-12 at Indiana-South Bend on Saturday. In their last three games however, the Trojans have gone a combined 26-for-42 (61.9%).
• On the defensive end, Trinity has recorded 292 total steals, 19th-most in the NAIA. The Trojans have a turnover margin of +1.1, good for 50th-best in the nation.
• TIU head coach Laurel Wartluft earned her 361st career victory against Maranatha Baptist on Feb. 2. Wartluft is one of 15 active coaches in NAIA Division II with 350 or more victories.
• Trinity is averaging 60.8 points per game as a team, good for 13th in the CCAC. Defensively, the Trojans allow an average of 67.7 points per game, ranking 6th in the league.
• Maranatha posts lower averages on both offensive and defensive ends of the court; the Sabercats allow just 55.7 points per game to their opponent, but average only 56.6 points per game on offense.
• Trinity ranks 4th in the CCAC with an average of 10.8 steals per game. Sarina Falvo leads the team with 45 steals on the season.
• With a win on Tuesday, the Trojans can match last season's win total. A year ago Trinity posted a record of 8-19, which was the program's highest win total in three seasons.
 

Series History

• Tuesday marks the 4th meeting between the Trojans and Sabercats in each program's history, all occuring within the last two seasons. Trinity holds a 3-0 lead in the series.
• The closest margin of victory between the two sides is an 11-point Trojan win on Feb. 16, 2016, 64-53.
 

Last Time Out vs. Maranatha Baptist

• Knocking down 14 three-pointers to set a new program record, Trinity out-gunned the visiting Sabercats inside Van Dixhorn Arena on Feb. 2, winning 84-57.
• Senior guard Rayelle Ross posted 20 points to lead the Trojans, going 8-for-14 from the field and 3-of-7 from beyond the arc in the win. Tashyra Burrough matched her career high with four three-point field goals, finishing with 15 points, while Cheyenne Berbey set a new career high with 12 points on 3-of-5 shooting from three-point range. Sarina Falvo also knocked down three from long range, finshing with nine points.
 

Scouting the Opponent

• The Sabercats hold an 11-10 overall record, as the NCAA Division III independent comes into play Tuesday on a two-game win streak.
• Senior forward Hanna Glaze leads the team with 13.3 points per game, while junior Alexis Johnson averages 12.6 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game. 
 

National Leaders

• Sarina Falvo ranks 18th among the NAIA national leaders in free throw shooting, connecting at the stripe with an .846 percentage.
 

Trojan Program History

• Head Coach Laurel Wartluft is one of the winningest active head coaches in the NAIA; Wartluft has collected 361 wins over her 26 years as a head coach.
• TIU has made two appearances at the NAIA Women's Basketball Championship, in 1992-93, and 1994-95. The Trojans lost in the first round both times, to College of the Ozarks (Mo.) in 1993, and Western Oregon in 1995.
• Since 2003-04, TIU has posted an overall record of 166-261 (.389).
•Trinity International has never appeared in the NAIA Coaches Poll since it's debut in 1999-00.
 

Record Book

• Five Trojans have reached 1,000 career points, most recently Brittany Simon (2009-13), with 1,104 points.
• Basha Ramsey is the active career leader in scoring, with 690 points. With 19 more points, Basha can move into 10th on TIU's all-time scoring list, matching Rachel Edelen (2004-08) with 709 career points.
• Ramsey also currently 6th in the TIU record books with 474 career rebounds, surpassing Edelen with four rebounds against Cardinal Stritch on Saturday.
• Senior guard Arielle Miree has recorded 239 career assists in her four seasons as a Trojan, good for 3rd-most in program history. Her 173 career steals rank 7th in the TIU record books.
