Box Score WEST ALLIS, Wisc. - Trinity International (1-0) opened its 2017 campaign in thrilling fashion, rolling over the Warriors of Wisconsin Lutheran College 58-21 on Saturday evening.
It was a balanced offensive attack all evening long for TIU, as they saw six different players make receptions as well as 9 Trojans carry the rock throughout the game. The Quarterback combo of
Danny Mattero, and
Chris Wolcott lead by example for the Trojans, with Mattero racking up 127 and two TD's through the air, while Wolcott rushed for 84 yards and a score.
The Trojan defense forced a three and out on the opening Warrior drive, giving the ball to Mattero and offense who would drive the length of the field to get Trinity International on the board first. Junior running back
Isaac Branch rushed for one of his two touchdowns on the evening, scoring from 12 yards out to open the scoring for the Trojans who would not look back from there.
The play of the Special Teams for TIU proved to be a catalyst in the game, as Freshman
Jabial White took a Warrior punt 76 yards to the house in his first collegiate game. White collected 108 total return yards on the evening, wreaking havoc all game long. The Trojans then extended the game early in the the 2nd Quarter when Mattero would sling his first TD of the game, finding
Caleb Kelley from five yards out for the first touchdown of his career.
Wisconsin Lutheran eventually found the end zone with eight minutes to go in the half, thanks to back to back pass-interference penalties on the Trojans, setting up Pat Matheison for the five yard rushing score.Â
With just under four minutes to go in the 1st half the Trojan defense shined yet again. Sophomore
Mario Williams snagged his first interception of the season, and the first of four for TIU on the day, setting up Mattero and Trojans for a chance to extend the lead going into half time.
Mattero would do just that, throwing his second TD of the game, connecting with Senior
Brad Hargis from 25 yards out, pushing the lead to 28-7 at the break.
The running back duo of Branch and
Linell Gaston would tack on two more rushing TD's for TIU in the 3rd quarter pushing the Trojan lead to 42-14. The Warriors would not go down without a fight late in the game, adding another touchdown to make it 42-21 after Matheison rushed for his second score of the evening.
It was only fitting that the Trojan defense which played so well all evening long would seal the game. Late in the 4th quarter Safety
Bradley Mowbray grabbed the Trojans fourth interception of the contest, taking it back 28 yards for the score. With the pick-six TIU would put the game well out of reach.
With the win, the Trojans have won four games in a row dating back to the 2016 season, their longest combined win streak since 2013.
The Trojans return to Deerfield for their home opener next Saturday 9/9 as the Concordia Cardinals (Mich.) come to Frazier Field, for a non-conference matchup.
