Quick Notes
• The quest to defend last season's title begins Saturday, when the Trinity International Trojans welcome Cardinal Stritch to Schartner Field, for a quarterfinal matchup in the 2014 CCAC Tournament. Kickoff against the Wolves is set for 11:00 a.m., as a part of TIU's Blue & White Weekend, featuring four sports with home games over Friday and Saturday. The quarterfinal matchup will also be available online, at TIUtrojans.com/TIUSportsNetwork
• The Trojans wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the conference tourney, with a 5-1 win at Holy Cross to wrap up the regular season.
• Junior forward Samantha Yasatan is the CCAC leader in goals scored, with 29 this season, setting a new TIU single-season record in the process.
• Trinity has averaged 3.75 goals per match this season, most in the CCAC, and the 7th-highest average in the NAIA.
• Cardinal Stritch has averaged 1.20 goals per game, good for 11th in the conference. The Lakers have given up an even 2.00 goals per match, however, the 7th-lowest total in the CCAC.
Last Time Out
• Giving up an early lead, the Trojans came back with five unanswered en route to a 5-1 win at Holy Cross in the regular season finale.
• Morgan Elzinga scored the equalizer in the 15th minute, with Samantha Yasatan putting away the game winner just nine minutes later, her 28th of the season, and first of two goals in the win over the Saints.
• Senior Liz Burzynski played all 90 mintues in goal, making a 5 saves in the win, and lowering her goals-against average to 1.19 on the season.
In the Polls
• Despite their current six-match win streak, the Trojans came up just short of cracking the NAIA Coaches Poll top 25 last week. TIU has 127 points in the latest poll, essentially placing 26th in the national rankings, just seven points shot of earning a national rank.
• TIU started the season ranked No. 25 in the NAIA Preseason Coaches Poll, and moved up to No. 22 before falling out following a draw at Trinity Christian, and loss at Olivet Nazarene in early October.
• The earlier ranking gives the Trojans their third straight campaign in which they were nationally ranked at some point during the season.
• The Trojans finished off last season as a nationally-ranked program, finishing the year at No. 25, after their late postseason run through the CCAC Tournament and into the NAIA Opening Round.
• The Trojans kept their spot in the NCCAA Top 10 national rankings, released on Tuesday, at No. 4. TIU earned 40 points in the poll, and are the highest-ranked program from the North Central Region.
NCCAA Championship Anniversary
• The TIU women's soccer program is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of their second NCCAA National Championship, in 2004. The team will be honored with an anniversary sleeve patch on this year's uniforms, and will be recognized during the match against Calumet St. Joseph, as a part of the Homecoming Weekend festivities.
• The Trojans defeated Heritage Christian (Ala.), Cedarville (Ohio), and Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) by a combined score of 7-1 to claim the title.
• Four players (Allison Budden, Kelly Campbell, Jill Barre, Ashleigh Dellos) were named to the NCCAA All-Tournament Team; Barre earned Tournament MVP honors, while head coach Patrick Gilliam was named NCCAA National Coach of the Year.
• Trinity has made seven appearances in the NCCAA Tournament in program history, winning twice, in 2004 and 1998. TIU holds a 15-6 record all-time in the tournament.
• The Trojans have clinched the minimum win percentage of .600 to qualify for this year's NCCAA North Central Regional, and will make an appearance in the regional tournament if they do not advance to the NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship.
Stat Leaders
Team Stats
• As a team, Trinity International not only leads the CCAC with an average of 3.75 goals per match, but also rank 7th nationally in the NAIA. TIU has a conference-high 60 goals on the season, good for 9th in the NAIA
• TIU also leads the league in assists per game, averaging 3.25 per match. The team ranks 3rd in the NAIA, and 7th nationally with 52 total assists.
• The Trojans currently average the third-fewest fouls per match, at 7.19, just behind Calumet St. Joseph and Purdue-Calumet. TIU is also the only program in the CCAC with just two yellow cards this season.
• Defensively, the Trojans average 1.31 goals allowed per game, the fourth-lowest average in the CCAC. The team's goals-against average of 1.26 also ranks fourth in the league, but Trojan goalkeepers have been fairly quiet, averaging just 4.19 saves per match, the second-lowest average in the conference.
• Trinity is one of five CCAC teams with at least four shutouts this season; Trinity Christan and Olivet Nazarene lead the league with eight clean sheets apiece this year.
Individual Stats
• Samantha Yasatan has been one of the strongest offensive players in the nation this season, and ranks 1st in the CCAC in five different statistical categories. The junior tops the conference in shots taken per game (5.56), points (62) and points average (3.88), goals, (29) and goals average (1.81). Yasatan also ranks 2nd in the CCAC in total shots, with 89.
• Yasatan sits 2nd in the NAIA in goals per game, 2nd in points per game, 2nd in total goals, 3rd in total points, 5th in shots on goal per game (3.88), and 7th in shots per game.
• Melissa Loretto and Morgan Elzinga have been just as dynamic in the Trojan attack; the duo rank 1st and 2nd in total assists in the CCAC, with 15 and 12, respectively. Loretto & Elzinga also sit 1st and 2nd nationally in the NCCAA.
• Elzinga has recorded six game-winning goals, and has picked up the game-winner in 38% of all matches this season, the seventh-highest percentage in the NAIA. Her six game-winners ranks 6th nationally, and 2nd in the CCAC. Elzinga is also 5th in the CCAC in total goals, scoring 12 so far this year.
• Goalkeeper Liz Burzynski has the CCAC's fourth-best goals against average, at 1.19. Her save percentage of .778 ranks 5th in the conference.
Scouting the Opponents
Cardinal Stritch
• The Wolves earned the No. 7 seed in the CCAC Tournament, grabbing the last spot in the tourney despite ending the regular season with a 4-1 loss at Trinity Christian on Oct. 29. CSU secured their spot thanks to wins over St. Xavier, 2-1, and Calumet St. Joseph, 5-1, in the previous two matches.
• CSU ranks last in the CCAC in points per match (3.13), and goals scored (18), but have the fifth-best defense in the conference, allowing an average of 2.00 goals per match.
• Sophomore forward Jamie Karch has been the Wolves top offensive threat, and ranks 8th in the CCAC with 3.33 shots taken per match. Karch has three goals on the year, while Anna Stadler and Muneta Kamberi lead Stritch with four goals each.
• Trinity has won the last four meetings with the Wolves, including this season's 2-0 win at Schartner Field on Oct. 18.
Good Sports
• In 2013, for the third straight season, the Trinity International women's soccer team earned the CCAC Karl Boeck Conference Champions of Character Team Award. The team honor goes to the squad that displays the best sportsmanship throughout the season in the CCAC.
• Currently, Trinity is one of two programs with the longest streak without a red card in the CCAC, and along with Trinity Christian, have gone five full seasons since seeing one of their players sent off.
