#17 TRINITY INTERNATIONAL TROJANS (1-3-1) vs. MISSOURI BAPTIST SPARTANS (2-4)
Saturday, September 26 | 12:00 p.m.
Schartner Field | Deerfield, Ill.
Quick Notes
• Trinity International returns to Schartner Field after a pair of road trips, and will look to snap a two-match slide when they host the St. Xavier Cougars on Wednesday, September 23 at 4:00 p.m. The Trojans then face Missouri Baptist in a non-conference matchup on Saturday, September 26 at noon.
• Wednesday's match will be streamed live online, at TIUTrojans.com. A stream for Saturday will not be available, but fans can still follow along with live stats.
• The Trojans are looking to bounce back from two straight one-goal defeats, at Concordia (Wisc.) on Sept. 7, and again last Saturday at Robert Morris.
• The Trinity offense has started slowly, with three goals scored in the season's first five matches. TIU ranks 12th in the CCAC with 0.60 goals scored per game in the early season, and will enter Wednesday's match on a 192-minute scoreless drought.
• Defensively, the Trojans hold a 0.96 goals against average, good for 2nd in the CCAC.
• Trinity is coming off three straight seasons with 13 or more wins, and two consecutive appearances in the NAIA Women's Soccer Championship.
Last Time Out
• In the first CCAC match of the season, the Trojans played solid defense, but were unable to find the back of the net, as the host Robert Morris Eagles defeated the Trojans 1-0 last weekend.
• Both sides played a scoreless first half, with the Eagles outshooting TIU by a 8-2 margin. In the 66th minute, RMU's Abby Vandergriff found the rebound of a free kick on goal and put in the first and only goal of the match.
• Freshman goalkeeper McKenzie Chappell finished the night with nine saves, setting a new season high. Brianna Bernholdt led the Trojans with two shots.
In the Polls
• Trinity International earned its highest ranking in eight years, as the Trojans were slotted at No. 17 in the NAIA Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches Top 25 Poll last month.
• Trinity improved six spots from their No. 23 ranking in the final 2014 poll, and have earned the program's highest ranking since the 2007 preseason poll, when the Trojans were selected No. 14. That season, TIU finished with an 11-8-2 overall record, reaching the NCCAA North Central Regional Final.
• TIU's appearance in the preseason poll also marks the fourth straight season that the Trojans have been nationally ranked at some point during the year.
• TIU has been ranked in the Preseason Poll eight times in program history, since the poll began in 1999. (2000-2002, 2007, 2012-15)
Last Meeting with SXU & MBU
• After being kept off the scoreboard for their previous two matches, the Trojans made up for their scoring drought in a big way, defeating the St. Xavier Cougars 6-1 at Schartner Field on Oct. 7, 2014.
• Three different players scored a pair of goals each for the Trojans, who tallied three goals in each half en route to their sixth win of the season.
• The last meeting with Missouri Baptist came in the second match of 2012, resulting in a 2-1 road victory for Trinity.
• Freshman Samantha Yasatan scored her third career goal in the match, while freshman Morgan Elzinga put away her first career goal in overtime for the win.
Scouting the Opponents
St. Xavier
• The Cougars are coming off a 2-1 win over Bethel (Ind.) last week, and are taking their first road trip in nearly a month when they come to Deerfield for their first match of CCAC play.
• The SXU attack is tied for 9th in the CCAC, averaging 0.83 goals per match. Defensively, the Cougars have the 5th-best goals against average in the league, at 1.33.
• Senior Lexi Cozzi returns after earning All-CCAC 2nd Team honors a year ago.
• Goalkeeper Alex Perry ranks 4th in the CCAC in save percentage, at .793, and has a goals against average of 1.73, good for 8th among league leaders.
• Since 2007, St. Xavier holds a slim 5-4-2 lead in the all-time series over Trinity International. The Trojans, however, are unbeaten in five straight meetings, including a matchup in the 2010 CCAC Tournament Quarterfinal, in which TIU advanced on penalties after a 2-2 draw in extra time.
Missouri Baptist
• The Spartans are 1-4 entering play this week, following a 4-0 win over Stephens (Mo.) on Saturday in their conference opener.
• MBU goalkeeper Alexandra Lair ranks 7th nationally in the NAIA, with 10.67 saves per match.
• Senior Taylor Giese was an All-American Midwest Honorable Mention pick last season, and recorded a hat trick in Missouri Baptist's win over Stephens.
• The Trojans and Spartans have met once previously, with Trinity earning a 2-1 overtime win in St. Louis.
Champions of Character
• Last season, Trinity International earned the Karl Boeck Conference Champions of Character Award for the fourth consecutive year. The Trojans have gone six straight seasons without a single red card; in 2014, TIU was charged with two yellow cards over 20 matches, for the lowest per-match average in the CCAC.
Player Notes
• Freshman McKenzie Chappell has started the last three matches for the Trojans in goal, and has a 1.00 goals against average, with three goals allowed. Chappell leads the CCAC with a .850 save percentage, and is 3rd in the leage in goals against average.
• Sophomore goalkeeper Surina Lewandowski has gotten the starting job the first two matches of the year, and has posted a 0.90 goals against average.
• Two players; senior Kelsey Gill and sophomore Michelle Ortiz, have been on the field for all 470 minutes so far this season.
Up Next
• The Trojans hit the road for a mid-week matchup at Purdue-Calumet on Tuesday, September 29, before facing St. Francis on Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 3.
