Quick Notes
• Following a pair of hard-fought matchups to start the season, the 17th-ranked Trinity International Trojans are still in search of their first victory, as they wrap up a three-match homestand on Saturday, against the Concordia (Mich.) Cardinals. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m., and for those unable to get out to Schartner Field, the match will be streamed online at TIUTrojans.com.
• Trinity will take their first road trip of the year on Monday, when they head north to take on the Concordia (Wisc.) Falcons from Mequon, Wisc. at 1:00 p.m.
• Despite allowing only two goals in the first two matches of the year, the Trinity offense has started slowly, with just one goal scored. TIU ranks 12th in the CCAC with 0.5 goals scored per game in the early season.
• Defensively, the Trojans hold a 0.90 goals against average, good for 6th in the CCAC.
• Trinity is coming off three straight seasons with 13 or more wins, and two consecutive appearances in the NAIA Women's Soccer Championship.
Last Time Out
• The Trojans battled for nearly two hours with No. 11 The Master's (Calif.) last week, coming out with a scoreless draw against the team that knocked TIU out of the NAIA Tournament a year ago. On Saturday, Trinity fell 2-1 to Marian (Ind.) at Schartner Field.
• Senior forward Samantha Yasatan picked up her first goal of the season against the Knights, tying the match in the 67th minute. Marian stormed back to score again in the 69th minute to drop the Trojans to 0-1-1 after the first week of play.
In the Polls
• Trinity International earned its highest ranking in eight years, as the Trojans were slotted at No. 17 in the NAIA Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches Top 25 Poll two weeks ago.
• Trinity improved six spots from their No. 23 ranking in the final 2014 poll, and have earned the program's highest ranking since the 2007 preseason poll, when the Trojans were selected No. 14. That season, TIU finished with an 11-8-2 overall record, reaching the NCCAA North Central Regional Final.
• TIU's appearance in the preseason poll also marks the fourth straight season that the Trojans have been nationally ranked at some point during the year.
• TIU has been ranked in the Preseason Poll eight times in program history, since the poll began in 1999. (2000-2002, 2007, 2012-15)
Scouting the Opponents
• Concordia (Mich.) come into play this weekend with a 3-1 record, outscoring their opponents by a combined 11-4 margin. The Cardinals have an opportunity to come to Deerfield riding a three-match winning streak, with a match against Concordia (Wisc.) on tap Friday.
• Julia Palushaj, last year's WHAC Newcomer of the Year, leads the team with three goals on the year, including two game-winners, placing her in a tie for 2nd nationally in the NAIA. The Cardinals have depth up front, with seven different players having scored a goal already this year.
• Concordia (Wisc.) opened the season with a 3-1 victory over Carroll (Wisc.) at home and will take on Concordia (Mich.) on Friday before hosting the Trojans. The Falcons finished 2nd in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference a year ago with an 8-2 record, and bring back a pair of All-NACC First Team forwards in seniors Brittany Klumpp and Carley Pfannerstill. Pfannerstill scored twice in the win over Carroll on Tuesday.
• Trinity's match against both Concordias will be the first meeting since at least 2006.
Champions of Character
• Last season, Trinity International earned the Karl Boeck Conference Champions of Character Award for the fourth consecutive year. The Trojans have gone six straight seasons without a single red card; in 2014, TIU was charged with two yellow cards over 20 matches, for the lowest per-match average in the CCAC.
Player Notes
• Sophomore goalkeeper Surina Lewandowski has gotten the starting job the first two matches of the year, and has posted a 0.90 goals against average, good for 6th in the CCAC. Lewandowski also ranks 43rd nationally in the NAIA with an average of 6.0 saves per game.
• Freshman Isabelle Danner recorded her first collegiate point in the match with Marian on Saturday, recording an assist on Samantha Yasatan's goal in the second half.
• Five players have been on the field for all 200 minutes so far this season: seniors Kathryn Baccash, Kelsey Gill, and Taylor Richards, along with sophomores Michelle Ortiz and Surina Lewandowski.
Up Next
• The Trojans begin conference play a week from Saturday, when they face CCAC rival Robert Morris. Kickoff from Morris Field in Arlington Heights, Ill. is set for 5:30 p.m.
